Hello, welcome to my page.

My name is Miguel Lerma. I currently work as Computer System Administrator at the Department of Mathematics of Northwestern University.

In August 1998 I finished my graduate studies at the Department of Mathematics of The University of Texas at Austin. My dissertation was about "An Extremal Majorant for the Logarithm and its Applications".

I studied Mathematics and Physics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, where I got two B.S.'s. Later I studied for a Ph.D. at the Department of Computer Science of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain, where I wrote a doctoral dissertation about Neural Networks.

I worked in Madrid as a High School Math Teacher and also at the Department of Mathematics of the Universidad Complutense, where I taught Geometry. In the Computer Science Department of the Universidad Politécnica I taught Compilers and Functional Programming.

At UT my area of interest was Number Theory. I did research in Distribution Modulo One (pdf) and Extremal Functions in Fourier Analysis (pdf).

In Computer Science my interests have derived toward Computation Theory, including the study of alternative computation models. I feel a very special fascination for that land in the middle ground between Computer Science and Mathematics. I have lot of work in drafts and some ideas in mind to develop in the near future. I have been also playing around a little bit in the area of recreational Computer Science. As an example here is a self-referent sentence that I made in 1992 - I believe it is the first one of its kind in Spanish:

More recently I became interested in the area of Artificial Intelligencei, particularly Neural Networks and Deep Learning.

I briefly worked in the translation business. I used to be a member of the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters Association (AATIA) and the American Translators Association (ATA), and the The Chicago Area Translators and Interpreters Association. My language pair was English to Spanish.

Besides my work and my studies I have other interests. I like Mathematical puzzles, computers, Science in general, and also Philosophy and Humanism.
